Shri John D'Silva

From an Acorn to an Oak

 

Shri John D'Silva was born on May 16, 1936, in a farmer's family of Shri Anthony D'Silva and Smt Remedia D'Silva in Sanoor Village in Karkala Taluka of Karnataka State. Part of a brood of five sons and one daughter, he had to work hard since that high. 

After primary schooling in the local St Joseph's  School, secondary education entailed footing it out to the S V T School in the faraway town of Karkala.  Moreover, he had to work half day in the field and then rush to school.  He with a strong craving for learning also learnt to count the blessings of life even then: the school, run by a temple, provided free meals to students coming from far-off places.

Over to Mumbai for higher education at the instance of his elder brother, the ambitious John worked in his brother-in-law's shop during the day and attended the Karnataka Free Night High School till he passed SSLC in 1955.  Then he did his BA (Jai Hind College) and B.Com. (R.A. Podar College while holding a regular Government job.

After graduation he joined Glaxo, the multinational Pharmaceutical Company.  He loved helping people and was gradually developing an aptitude for social work. His first ever achievement was starting a school in the name of the Society. In 1962 he was instrumental in forming the New Cosmopolitan Education Society at Abhyudaya Nagar, where he was residing.  It was renamed as Abhyudaya Education Society in 1964.

What gave him this vision? "Well, it is Life" he says, "the greatest teacher of all."

He has the unique distinction of organizing and laying firm footing to the following four co-operative Banks:

1. Abhyudaya Co-op. Bank Ltd., as its Chief promoter and First Managing director.

2. New India Co-op. Bank Ltd., as its promoter and First Managing Director.

3. Citizencredit Co-op. Bank Ltd., as its Chief promoter and First Chairman.

4. Model Co-op. Bank Ltd., as its Chief promoter and First Chairman.

iii. Distinguished Achievement Awards-2008 to Outstanding Konkani from Dr. T. M. A. Pai Foundation, Manipal.
