Smokers are killing people


Non-smokers of the world unite: You have nothing to lose but second-hand smoke lining your lungs with tar. According to an alarming report from the World Health Organization, more than 600,000 people die each and every year from the effects of second-hand smoke.

These are innocent victims, condemned to death by lung disease and heart ailments, a fatal sentence from those who carelessly indulge in the cruel act of smoking. Not content to inflict physical harm upon their own bodies, smokers kill the innocent with their toxic smoke.

Around the world, tobacco is the leading cause of preventable deaths. It kills five million people a year. And if current trends continue, a billion people this century will die from this disgusting habit.

What will it take for smokers to see common sense? Graphic images of tar-lined lungs adorning cigarette cartons? A health levy on those who waste the resources of the medical system with their diseased lungs and failing hearts? A high rate of tax on tobacco products? Or the complete outlawing of such products altogether?

Thankfully, some progress is being made by the introduction of non-smoking laws by legislators around the world. But these efforts are still too few and too far between.

I'm sure most of you would have got this problem checked by the ENT specialist. All these are symptoms of Vertigo.

Vertigo is caused due to an imbalance in the canals of the ear. The human ear has certain receptors, which detect motion of the head and neck with respect to the rest of your body. These help you adjust or adapt to various sudden change in position. Positional Vertigo is seen when there is a problem with these receptors and they are unable to function to their optimum level. That is when you feel giddy when your head moves suddenly, when you change position in bed or wake up in a hurry in the morning.


Vertigo can occur in various forms, but positional type is the most common one seen in women. It can occur at any age and is usually also associated with Neck Spondylosis and head injury.

Dizziness => Lack of head and neck movement => More dizziness => Stiff neck => Severe dizziness.

This is a vicious cycle. This ultimately leads to lack of mobility for the fear of falling and in turn makes you feel frustrated and limits your ability to do your daily activities and even socialize.

Is there any cure for this? Yes, definitely. You may need to visit the ENT specialist, who would be able to diagnose the type of vertigo. He would prescribe some medications, which would however give you temporary relief. However, long-term use of these medications would only lead to some side effects and later no relief from symptoms. Along with medication, Physiotherapy can help you to a very large extent. Many people are unaware of this fact. Physiotherapists can examine you by doing various provocative tests and also treat you. They would treat you with some positional treatments, which have to be maintained for 3-4 days followed by exercises. The exercises are meant to help your receptors adapt to the changes in position in your daily life activities. These also help you to improve your balance and thus improve your sense of well being. There are exercises to help improve you gaze stability and postural control. Some of the exercises are as follows:


Exercises to Improve Gaze Stability

  • Tape a board with a dot on the wall in front of you so that you can see it. Move your head from side to side keeping the dot in focus. Move your head faster but keep the dot in focus. Continue to do this for 1-2 minutes without stopping.
  • Repeat the exercise moving your head up and down. Repeat the exercises using a large pattern such as a checkerboard. Start slowly and then increase your speed.

Exercises to improve Postural stability (Balance)

  • Walk close to a wall with a narrow base of support. Finally walk heel to toe. Do this with eyes open and then closed.
  • Walk close to a wall and turn your head to the right and to the left as you walk. Try to focus on different objects as you walk. Gradually turn your head more often and faster.


There are more exercises, but all these need to be done only under the proper supervision of the Physiotherapist.

Vertigo is not a self-limiting condition if examined and treated at the right time. So as soon as you feel any of the symptoms, go to an ENT specialist and then visit the nearest physiotherapy center for further help. Prompt treatment and regular exercise can help you lead an independent life without any insecurity or feeling of frustration. Take care of yourselves now, as now is all you have.

Slice a Carrot and it looks just like an eye, right down to the pattern of the iris. It is a clear clue to the importance this everyday vegetable has for vision. Carrots get their orange colour from a plant chemical called betacarotene, which reduces the risk of developing cataracts. The chemical also protects against macular degeneration an age-related sight problem that affects one in four over-65s. It is the most common cause of blindness in Britain. But popping a betacarotene pill does not have the same effect, say scientists at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore




The gnarled folds of a walnut mimic the appearance of a human brain and provide a clue to the benefits. Walnuts are the only nuts which contain significant amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. They may also help head off dementia. An American study found that walnut extract broke down the protein-based plaques associated with Alzheimers disease. Researchers at Tufts University in Boston found walnuts reversed some signs of brain ageing in rats. Dr James Joseph, who headed the study, said walnuts also appear to enhance signalling within the brain & encourage new messaging links between brain cells.



A Tomato is red and usually has four chambers, just like our heart. Tomatoes are also a great source of lycopene, a plant chemical that reduces the risk of heart disease & several cancers. The Women Health Study  an American research programme which tracks the health of 40,000 women found women with the highest blood levels of lycopene had 30 per cent less heart disease than women who had very little lycopene. Lab experiments have also shown that lycopene helps counter the effect of unhealthy LDL cholesterol. One Canadian study, published in the journal Experimental Biology & Medicine, said there was convincing vidence that lycopene prevented coronary heart disease.




Close-up, the tiny green tips on a broccoli head look like hundreds of cancer cells. Now scientists know this disease-busting veg can play a crucial role in preventing the disease. Last year, a team of researchers at the US National Cancer Institute found just a weekly serving of broccoli was enough to reduce the risk of prostate cancer by 45 per cent. In Britain, prostate cancer kills one man every hour.




Our lungs are made up of branches of ever-smaller airways that finish up with tiny bunches of tissue called alveoli. These structures, which resemble bunches of grapes, allow oxygen to pass from the lungs to the blood stream. One reason that very premature babies struggle to survive is that these alveoli do not begin to form until week 23 or 24 of pregnancy. A diet high in fresh fruit, such as grapes, has been shown to reduce the risk of lung cancer & emphysema. Grape seeds also contain a chemical called proanthocyanidin, which appears to reduce the severity of asthma triggered by allergy.




A nice holey cheese, like Emmenthal, is not just good for your bones, it even resembles their internal structure. & like most cheeses, it is a rich source of calcium, a vital ingredient for strong bones & reducing the risk of osteoporosis later in life. Together with another mineral called phosphate, it provides the main strength in bones but also helps to power muscles. A study at Columbia University in New York showed teens who increased calcium intake from 800mg a day to 1200mg & equal to an extra two slices of cheddar - boosted their bone density by six per cent.

Bronchitis can be described as an acute inflammation of the membranes lining the larger air passages (bronchi), with excessive production of mucus. The symptoms of the ailment include coughing up extra mucus - sometimes with blood, wheezing, difficult breathing and runny nose. Depending on its severity, bronchitis can be classified into acute bronchitis and chronic bronchitis. While the former lasts for a few days or weeks, the latter can stretch from three months to two years. In the following lines, we have listed natural treatments for bronchitis.

Natural remedies for Bronchitis

l Take a few leaves of castor oil plant and warm them on a flat pan. Take off the pan, cool down slightly and spread on the chest. Leave them there for the night. Don't intake these leaves, as castor plant is poisonous.
l Mix equal amount of flour and water, enough to make a paste, and add some mustard powder to the mixture. Spread it on the chest area and leave it undisturbed overnight.

l Boil a cup of water. Grind horseradish root and put it in a cup. Pour the boiling water on top of the root. Wait for 5 minutes, so that the water cools down and then, drink the decoction. Consume this 3 times a day.

l Take a cup of hot water and add a teaspoon of licorice root tea to it. Set aside for 10 minutes. Thereafter, strain the tea and drink it. Consume this 3 times a day.

l Consume almonds, in any form. They are known for their healing powers in cases of respiratory illness and can help bring relief from bronchitis.

l Grate lemon rind and put 1 teaspoon in a cup of boiling water. After steeping for five minutes, strain it thoroughly and let it cool down a bit. Drink 2-3 times in a day.

l Take fresh or dried bay leaf and steep it in a cup of boiling water. Strain it into a cup and let it cool down a bit. Consume this decoction 2-3 times in a day.

l Soak some bay leaves in hot water and after cooling them down a bit, apply to the chest, as a poultice. Cover with a towel or any other thick cloth. Re-warm the leaves when they cool down completely.

l Steep 1/2 teaspoon ginger, a pinch of ground cloves and a pinch of cinnamon in 1 cup boiling water. Strain the concoction and let it cool down a bit, after which you can drink it.

l Mix 1 tablespoon dry mustard and 4 tablespoons flour. Add some warm water, in order to form a runny paste. Make a poultice of this paste, from muslin, gauze or kitchen washcloth, and place it on the chest, after applying some oil on the latter.

l Take a cup of boiling water and add 1/2 teaspoon savory. Let it cool down a bit and drink it, only once a day.

l Add 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon thyme to a cup of boiling water and let it steep for 5 minutes. Add 1/2 tsp honey and drink it. You can also dilute thyme oil, by adding 2 parts olive or corn oil to 1 part thyme oil, and rub it on the chest.

l Take a glass of lukewarm milk and add half a teaspoon turmeric powder to it, along with half a teaspoon honey. Drink it two or three times daily.
