KANPUR : The Kanpur Catholic Association (KCA) held its Annual General Meeting on 18th October at St Patrick's parish hall. In his exhortation Rev Eugene Mascarenhas, the Parish Priest, said that no matter what one's state in life, everyone has something that they can contribute to society.
KCA President chhotebhai, in his address quoted Vatican II documents and Canon Law to tell the members what the Church expects of Catholic Associations. Their work, not to be confused with that of Parish Councils, is in the temporal order of socio-economic and political affairs. The Vatican II document Lumen Gentium exhorts the laity to be the salt and leaven in society, transforming it from within.
Sri Angelo Menezes, Secretary, read out the annual report, which highlighted the various activities and services of the KCA. There was a special commitment to promoting communal harmony, protection of minority rights, a strong media presence, and involvement in political and civic affairs. The Treasurer, Sri P.U. Thomas, presented the Statement of Account prepared by Avinash Noronha. A sum of Rs 11075/- had been collected and sent to the AICU for rehabilitation of Christians in Orissa.
The Parish Priest presented Merit Awards in Academics and Sports to 19 youth. Future plans of the KCA include a blood donation drive, a Parichay Sammelan for youth of marriageable age, and an awareness programme for tribal domestic workers.
A new team of General Councillors, and Executive Committee Members were elected for a two-year term. The new office bearers are: President - Chhotebhai Noronha, Vice President - Noel George, Secretary - Angelo Menezes and Treasurer - Cornelius Kujur. The coming year is the silver jubilee of the KCA, which it intends celebrating in a meaningful manner.
