Goan priest in Eucharistic panel
The priest, currently an official at the Pontifical Council for Culture, in charge of the Asia, Africa and Oceania areas, said he feels "humbled" by the papal appointment. The Vatican newspaper L'osservatore Romano announced the five-year appointment on March 4.
The new job will "inspire me to work even more devotedly for Christ and the Church," said Father Mascarenhas, a member of the indigenous Society of the Missionaries of St. Francis Xavier, popularly known as the Pilar Society.
The consultative committee is to "animate and further the devotion to the Eucharist," Father Mascarenhas said.
The committee tries to popularize Eucharistic devotion through organizing international Eucharistic congresses, the Vatican's website says. The committee also appoints national delegates and sets up national Eucharistic committees if necessary.
Pope Leo XIII launched the congress in 1879 with Pope John Paul II revising its statutes in 1986. The last Eucharistic Congress was held in Quebec, Canada, in 2008.
The next congress, the 50th, is scheduled for 2012 in Dublin with the theme: Eucharist: Communion with Christ and With One Another.
