Cardinal Gracias new FABC secretary general

Cardinal Oswald Gracias has been elected as the secretary general of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conference (FABC).

He was elected to the post by the presidents of the FABC in its central committee meeting on October 21 in Bangkok.

The cardinal, who is also the president of Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, has been appointed with effect from January 1, 2012.

He succeeds Archbishop Orlando B. Quevedo from Philippines as the latter completes his two terms of office on December 31, 2011.

The secretary general’s term is for 3 years, which is renewable.

Cardinal Gracias was also a board member of FABC-Office of Social Communication for 6 years.

FABC is a voluntary association of episcopal conferences in South, Southeast, East and Central Asia, established with the approval of the pope.
