Delegation of journalists meet Governor; seek ordinance to prevent attacks on journalists

Mumbai:- A delegation of 20 journalists representing various organisations of journalists today met the Governor of Maharashtra K. Sankaranarayanan at Raj Bhavan Mumbai and presented him a memorandum protesting attacks on journalists, newspaper offices and offices of electronic media.

The delegation led by Prafulla Marpakwar, Chairman of State Accreditation Committee told the Governor that there had been 145 cases of attacks against journalists in Maharashtra during the last 3 years. He mentioned that the Government was, however non-committal about bringing a legislation to prevent the attacks.

The delegation urged the Governor that attacks on journalists be made non bailable and cognizable offence. Members of the delegation demanded that like the legislation preventing attack on doctors, an ordinance be promulgated to prevent attacks on journalists.

The Governor assured the delegation that he will take up the matter with the State Government.
