Mumbai:- There are more than 100 ChristianChurches; some are big institutions and some are small clusters spreading the love of Christ and serving humanity. There was a great need felt by Christian Community for cemetery in Mumbai Central Suburb. Thirty Three years ago, Christians of different denominations grouped together and initiated for Cemetery at Mulund. In 1996, Save The Mulund Cemetery Committee was formed and within one year it was renamed as The Mulund Cemetery Committee. After a prolonged legal battle, with Gods providence, in December 2004, we were blessed with this land for Cemetery. Battle belongs to the Lord!

Keeping in mind the space constraint and to accommodate more burials, in the year June 2009, Mr. Jude Fernandes, the President of the Committee put up a novel suggestion and proposal for constructing RCC graves to the Committee and Central Mumbai Christian Fellowship. The proposal was appreciated and taken up by Shri Sanjay Dina Patil, Member of Parliament of North East Mumbai constituency who released Rupees 45 lakhs from MP Fund. The construction started in August 2009 and with record time 300 RCC graves have been built in the first phase which will be inaugurated by Mr. Patil on 14th February 2010 at 4 pm at the Mulund East Composite Cemetery, Tata Colony Road, near Eastern Express Highway.

In a year approximately 80 to 100 burials take place and so far about 290 burials have been done. Construction of RCC graves would replace the traditional burial which occupies more space and would increase the burial capacity from 528 to 1600. The
planning for first phase would be 420 burials and second phase around 600. In the third phase the existing traditional burial ground will be opened up and reused with 600 more RCC graves. Usually the graves are opened for reuse after 24 months and the bones are transferred to Niches of the size of 18 x 12 x 12. While considering the present burial pattern, the need for third phase would come up after 8 years.

Shri Gurudas Kamath, the Member of Parliament from neighbouring constituency also lent his supporting hand in the development of Niches. Out of 400 Niches, 280 have been completed.

The Committee comprising churches viz. St. Pius X Church, St. George Orthodox Church, Syro Malabar Catholics, St. Gregorious JSO Church, Evangelical Church of India, North Bombay Marthoma Youth, Mulund Marathi Christi Mandal, Mainline Pentecostal Churches, Tamil Methodist Church, St. James Church (CNI), Church of South India, Church of Beraacha, New Life Fellowship, Immanuel Church, Lord Jesus Christ Fellowship and those allied to Central Mumbai Christian Fellowship are extremely thankful and grateful to Shri Sanjay Dina Patil and appreciated that - he who often stood shoulder to shoulder to recite Psalm 133: How wonderful it is, how pleasant, for Gods people to live together in harmony!

Mr. Joseph Reddy, General Manager-Administration from Hiranandani Group and the Committee Member remarked that he had never come across a great personality like Mr. Sanjay Dina Patil who goes all out to lend his support whole heartedly and generously for any social cause concerning the Society at large.
