India's Vanishing Christians

Christian population in different states

Nine out of ten Christians in Bihar have disappeared! In Andhra Pradesh the population of Christians has decreased. The Population Growth Rate (PGR) of Christians in Goa and Kerala is a fraction of the national average. But Delhi has seen a phenomenal growth in the number of Christians. Don’t believe me, but believe the statistics of the Census of India. A study of the figures for 1961 and 2001 (the latest available) is startling. Are they facts? Yes and no, for statistics are easily manipulatable. I do not wish to be a manipulator, so I will present both facts and figures.

The figures in the attached annexure are taken from the Census of India report of 2001. In 1961 there were 502,195 Christians in Bihar. Forty years later, in 2001, they were down to just 53,137, a drop of 89%! What the statistics don’t say is that in the interregnum a new State of Jharkhand was formed, and the majority of erstwhile Bihar’s Christians are to be found there. The data shows that the All India PGR between 1961 and 2001 was 134%. In contrast the Muslim PGR was much higher at 194%, while the Christians’ was lower at 124%. IN Delhi the Christian PGR was 345%, obviously because of immigration. Andhra Pradesh is the only State where the Christian population has actually dwindled from 1,428,729 in 1961 to 1,181,917 in 2001, a negative growth of 17%. And Telengana is still a part of Andhra. What does this indicate? Andhra has been in the forefront of the Dalit Christian movement. Is this indicative that the denial of equal rights to Dalit Christians has resulted in large-scale apostasy in Andhra? So much for our evangelisation.

Kerala and Goa are the two States that had a well-entrenched Christian presence. Their statistics merit attention. As against the national PGR of 134, and the Christian PGR of 124, in Goa the Christian PGR is lowest at 58%, and Kerala is not much better at 69%. Before we set the alarm bells ringing, we need to look at some other demographic realities.

Both Kerala and Goa have a high exodus of emigrants to other countries and States. Equally, they have a large influx of immigrant labour, as Keralites and Goans find manual labour below their dignity. Family planning is also more evident in both these States. In 2001 the Proportion of Age (0 – 6 years) had a national average of 15.9%. The average for Muslims was again higher at 18.7%, while that of Christians was lower at 13.5%. Goan Christians had the lowest proportion at 9.6%, while Kerala’s was 11.2%. Literacy has been a contributory factor. In 2001 the national literacy rate was 64.8%, while for women it was 53.7%. Among Christian Goans this was much higher at 83.8% and 78.8% respectively. Kerala Christians fared even better at 94.8% and 93.5% respectively.

One’s nature of work is also related to population growth. Those who till the land believe that for every mouth to feed there are two hands to work. They consider children an asset, not a liability. But the nature of Christian workers in Goa and Kerala again is different from the national norm. Among the categories of workers in 2001, the national average for cultivators and agricultural labourers was 58.2%. In contrast, for Goan Christians this was just 11.4%, and for Kerala Christians it was 24%. Small wonder then that all these factors have contributed to the vanishing Christians of Goa and Kerala (though Andhra is a sociological, not a demographic problem).

It is in this context that we need to address recent developments like the “Welfare of Women & Children Bill 2011” in the Kerala Assembly, and the strident reactions from Muslim and Christian religious leaders in Kerala. Why is the Bill so objectionable?

It seeks to enact harsh measures to control the population. It advocates a two-child norm; and three months’ jail or a fine of Rs 10,000/- for those who don’t follow this diktat. It further says that those organisations or individuals that campaign against family planning would also face imprisonment. This draconian measure has been likened to Sanjay Gandhi’s forced sterilisation drives during the Emergency (1975-77), and China’s one-child policy (1979).

Writing in Indian Currents (IC) Dr John Dayal says that China’s population policy has resulted in 30 million Chinese men without wives, with the attendant danger of increased violence against women and prostitution. A newspaper report says that wife-supplying agencies have erupted, arranging for women (wives) from Vietnam, with a money back guarantee of satisfaction. This is not surprising. Unabated female foeticide in India has resulted in a skewed sex ratio, with men from Haryana and Rajasthan actually paying for brides from poorer States. So the danger of excessive State control is real. However, Kerala, which incidentally has a high sex ratio, also has the highest population density of 859 persons per sq km; which Dr Dayal says is 3 times higher than the national average.

How has the Kerala church responded to this complex issue of a dense population and a draconian Bill? Long before any Bill was on the horizon the late Cardinal Vithayathil had advocated larger families; accusing parents who could afford it, of being selfish, by not producing more children. At that time I had strongly rebutted the cardinal’s convoluted logic. Now St Vincent de Paul Forane Church in Wynad district of Kerala has announced a Rs 10,000/- fixed deposit to be given to parents that produce a fifth child. The person who made the announcement, Salu Mecheril, is also the spokesperson of the Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Conference. So the announcement cannot be treated in isolation. The secular press has already splashed the news and made adverse editorial comments. The Kerala laity has also not taken this lying down. As reported in IC, Joseph Pullikkunel, Director, Indian Institute of Christian Studies, has objected, saying that “Catholic women are not just human machines producing children”.

The Kerala Bill is downright insane, even though the Christian Chief Minister of Kerala, Oommen Chandy, claims that “resentment against the draft is unwarranted”. How warranted is the reaction of the Catholic hierarchy? Rev Mathew O. Praem, writing in the same issue of IC, lets the cat out of the bag when he says that the bishops’ policy is “mainly in view of languishing vocations to priestly and religious life”. Had a layman like me said this, I would have immediately been branded anti-clerical. Coming from the horse’s mouth, need I say more? The reality is that large families in Kerala generously sent many of their offspring to novitiates and seminaries. Several foreign congregations even set up “fishing centres” in Kerala. With small families, the boom is over. They are no longer willing to contribute their mites (pun intended)!

This month the world population will cross the 7 billion mark. Here in India we are unable to define poverty. Infrastructure has collapsed, and forests have been slashed because of a burgeoning population. Voluntary family planning is essential to macro planning, and should not be opposed on purely sectarian grounds like empty novitiates and seminaries.

One must also ask the Catholic Church how effective has its propagation of Natural Family Planning (NFP) been? I taught about NFP before I got married! From the Rhythm Method we had progressed to the Sympto-Thermic Method, the Ovulation Method and the Modified Mucous Method. What happened? I throw an open challenge to the Catholic bishops of India to show us how many NFP centres are functioning in India today, and how many adherents they have. There is also mounting evidence that the Catholic Church is unable to cover the socio-economic needs of its existing members, particularly that of the Dalit Christians. So why talk of financial support to a fifth child?

The draconian Kerala bill should be thrown out, and the bishops’ fixed deposits with it. We need flexibility not fixity.

Will Prevention of Communal and Targeted Violence Bill, 2011, Prove to be an Effective Tool to Deal Communal Violence?

communal-violence

Even though people of this country had to wait long to find solutions to the centuries old communal violence history of India, the proposed Bill gives hope to the Nation. The Indian history is smeared with sporadic violence but large scale communal violence began in 1784 with the Mangalore Treaty signed between Tippu Sultan and the British East India Company. Tippu Sultan carried out continues persecutions of Christians and Hindus for over a decade.

The forced partition of India on communal lines, the anti-sikh riots in 1984,  the large scale violence that followed the Rath Yathra of L K Advani and the Babari Masjid demolition in 1992 , intermittent uprising of violence against the linguistic minorities,   Gujrath violence in 2002 and the Kandmal communal violence in 2008 etc. have given a wide spectrum to the makers of this Bill aimed at addressing not just victims of communal riots, but also dalits, tribals, linguistic minorities or any community that is in a minority in a particular region who are vulnerable to attack by more powerful members of society.

Following the 1992 communal violence and the growth and capturing of power by BJP have encouraged political parties to enter into secret understanding with the fundamental organizations. The extended influences of fundamental organizations have forced the political organizations to observe silence during communal clashes. We need to see the Bill against this back ground. The proposed bill gives the Centre, power to intervene in cases of communal or targeted violence by invoking a provision in Article 355 of the Constitution that states, "It shall be the duty of the Union to protect every state against external aggression and internal disturbance and ensure the government of every state is carried on in accordance with the provisions of this Constitution."

The Bill defines communal and targeted violence as “any act or series of acts, whether spontaneous or planned, resulting in injury or harm to the person and or property, knowingly directed against any person by virtue of his or her membership of any group, which destroys the secular fabric of the nation….” In Indian law, so far, only the SC and ST Atrocity Act recognises that certain groups can be targeted.

The features of the Bill includes setting up a National Authority for Communal Harmony, Justice and Reparation that will ensure a national standards for the entire spectrum of provisions for victims, including rescue, relief, compensation, rehabilitation, resettlement, restitution, reparation and recognizing the rights of internally displaced persons. The National Authority that works as independent body will have the power to approach even the highest court of law to secure orders and the governments would have to respond to its reports within a period of one month. It has also provisions to deal with hostile environment like economic boycott, denial of public services, and forced migration etc. The national and state authorities will be empowered to take suo motu action to quell communal violence.

The National Authority will have seven members of which at least four will be women, and no more than two can be retired civil servants and thus it provide greater space for civil society members. A specific feature is that it also provides provision to punish the head of a communal organisation for the acts committed by the foot soldiers, dereliction of duty by officials including the chain of administrators and political persons like Chief Ministers etc.

The civil society activists saw this Bill as the effective step to enforce the law while the people in government perceived it as a way of usurping its powers and this controversy even led to several extensions, and exit of members of its drafting and advisory committees. The Babus accused the civil society activists of trying to disempower the existing administrative and justice mechanisms but the good will of people have persisted. Taking note of the opinions of different groups, we need to wait and see how this Bill will be used by the successive Governments to deal with communal and sectarian violence.

A New Cross For This Lent

prominent - prominent

a-new-cross-for-this-lent-1

The Faithful are drawn to the cross in a special way during the period of Lent. These forty days are reserved to contemplate and resolve to live life in the steps of Jesus Christ who taught us to forgive, repent, love and give unconditionally.

This Lent there is a new cross to carry and it teaches self-control, patience and commitment! The followers of this new cross responded………….

The assembly of followers was cohesive, disciplined and included brethren of various Faiths. While many small cross were raised to the heavens, the upturned faces reflected the anguish and pain at the injustice of it all……there were no answers, only questions… and questions….

It all began on the fourth Saturday of February; the day BMC offices are closed. But the BMC staff known for their tardiness, worked zealously, stealthily pasting demolition notices on many of the heritage crosses in Bandra, giving the owners 48 hours time to prove their legality. When the notices were discovered they sent shock waves through the community that had been put through the same drill once before in 2003. The painful memories of those anxious hours returned resulting in a show of unity at Chapel road……….

According to media reports, the reason for the ‘clean sweep’ was the Supreme Court directives in an interim order to the State governments on December 7, 2009 to demolish illegal shrines. The BMC states that the show-cause notices have been sent to 729 illegal shrines in Mumbai that are said to be obstructing projects like road –widening, affecting vehicular traffic or are located on public land. But if the present reality of our roads and traffic is anything to go by, the motive for the notices is much more complex if the three reasons mentioned here are placed under the scanner. And that is what the peaceful gathering of people of all Faiths in front of the H-west Ward office intended to do- expose the hypocrisy of it all, a second time!

During 2002-2003, the BMC had issued similar show-cause notices to many heritage crosses, citing the same excuse. Descendents of the persons who had built these crosses were given just hours to prove that the crosses were legal and the reasons they were on public land at present. At that time all of Bandra had joined hands to dig out old records and files of these were handed over to the BMC authorities, proving that the crosses were not only legal but also heritage structures to be protected. History repeats itself as once again the same people are subjected to the same humiliating exercise of submitting the same documents to the BMC. It raises a serious doubt whether the documents were examined at all when submitted earlier. Why then do the BMC records fail to confirm what was proved once before?

The history of crosses dotting the landscape of Bandra is deeply knit into the fabric that is the past of ancient families that have lived in villages such as Sherly, Rajan, Khar, Chimbai and Chuim. These are the descendents of the original inhabitants of the islands who were simple, hardworking folk dependent on the community for their emotional, social and cultural needs. A cross in the clearing of the village was the focal point of all life, beckoning the folk to prayer, celebration, entertainment or plain simple chit-chat. Like the candle-lighting at shrines today, cross-building was supplication, knocking on heaven’s door for divine intervention. People in gaothans trace their crosses to the 19th and early 20th centuries…..

The dirt unearthed at this peaceful gathering is sufficient to nail BMC’s double standards and its lack of accountability to the tax-payers of this city. What motivated the BMC to paste show cause notices on crosses on a Saturday/holiday knowing that the people would be caught unawares? Considering the fact that to obtain any document from the BMC’s offices is a Herculean task taking weeks if not months, how does BMC expect the people to obtain documents from this same office in 48 hours? How is the BMC granting permission to encroachments on roads and pavements, considering its zeal for removing obstructions to its projects?

The august assembly of people on this Monday morning gathered at the BMC office chose to remind the Deputy Municipal Commissioner once again of how the reason for people’s qualms can be squarely placed at BMC’s door due to its negligence and short sight. Presenting the bare facts that have placed these heritage crosses in danger zone-

l    As roads were widened, many crosses that were previously on private properties were left stranded on public roads, neither moved nor protected by BMC. Either the owners should have retained the custody of these crosses or the BMC should shoulder the responsibility of enclosing and tending these as heritage structures.

l    The encroachments by hawkers, and commercial establishments allowed to prosper under the patronage of the same BMC are the real obstacles to vehicular traffic. Are they left untouched, to proliferate owing to money and muscle power?  ‘Remove the log before you touch the splinter….’!

l Glaring examples of setback forcibly taken during road widening is now being merrily misused by hawkers who take over the pavements meant for pedestrians, forced to use roads, thus blocking traffic. It was painful to relate how hawkers are reigning over the portion of St. Joseph’s Convent cemetery on Hill road…..

l With BMC’s poor record of clearing hawkers and encroachments, how can the people be assured that the cross is not making way for one more encroachment?

l The onus of proving the illegality of the cross should rest on BMC, since it should substantiate its claim before taking action of demolition. The people will have the right to prove BMC wrong, with the documents they possess. Why must the people suffer at the whims and fancies that seize BMC periodically?
l Does the forthcoming Civic election have anything to do with it?

l Would the same notices be sent to other wards and demolition carried out there on all illegal shrines?

Voices were raised in queries. Documents were brandished like harmless weapons. Among the many who had come prepared were Livy Fernandes of St. Ann’s parish Pali who possessed an ancient brochure-card that clearly stated that the White Cross in Rajan gaothan was erected with “Rajan Students’ Cross Fund, 4th May 1927” Both Fernandes and Adrian Pereira from Rajan gaothan are aghast at BMC callousness in serving the demolition notice to the White cross a second time. Another strong voice that seemed to speak for the dead cross- builders was that of Wilbert D’Silva and his sister Hermione of Sherly village. He not only flourished documents which had been submitted once before to prove the legality but also with his family members articulated the history of the Red Cross nearby, built by his own ancestors in 1825!
Anand Castelino, a long-time office-bearer, present Vice-President of the Bombay Catholic Sabha and an activist in his own right  recalls the saga of the cross near St. Michael’s church, Mahim. Though proven to be a legal monument it was demolished by BMC and a court order to rebuild it was needed to bring it back into existence.  Lessons are meant to be learnt, according to activist Anand!

There were strong indications on Monday that this was just the beginning of a long struggle……Coming on the heels of the massive one lakh-strong Christian demonstration against the biased Somshekhara report in Mangalore where churches were destroyed and the Blessed Sacrament desecrated in a well-planned reign of terror by fanatics, this not-so-small gathering of Christians no less heralds the era of Christian unity against injustice of any kind! May the commander of divine forces St. Michael lead us on……..

Benedict XVI and the Synod: dialogue and forgiveness in the face of violence

Benedict XVI and the Synod: dialogue and forgiveness in the face of violence
The Pope spoke for the first time about «Christianophobia» and reiterated the fact that violence runs counter to God and counter to Reason. Islamic terrorism is ideological blindness. Gratitude for expressions of solidarity from the Muslim world. The path of the Church and the Synod is a path of dialogue and forgiveness: there can be no peace without justice and no justice without forgiveness. A comment from the scholar of Islam Fr. Samir Khalil.
pope-benedict-1
In his long and complex address to the Roman Curia - a kind of meditative revision of the chief events of the year - Benedict XVI chose to dedicate space to the Middle East Synod. I shall here continue my comments on the Pontiff's words, which I began yesterday.
Having spoken of his visit to Cyprus, where he consigned theInstrumentum laboris to the patriarchs, Benedict XVI turned his attention to the Middle East, "where the followers of different religions - as well as a variety of traditions and distinct rites - live together", highlighting the diversity and multiplicity of Christian traditions.
1. Blind violence with no respect for the sacred
Unfortunately, the Pope noted, over the last few years the long history of coexistence among Christians and Muslims has been disturbed, and tensions and divisions have grown. We are witnessing an increase in acts of violence "in which there is no longer any respect for what the other holds sacred, in which on the contrary the most elementary rules of humanity collapse", he said.
I believe the Pope was alluding to the massacre of 31 October in the Syro-Catholic cathedral of "Our Lady of Perpetual Help" (Sayyidat al-Nagiât), where some fifty faithful were killed as they prayed, including children with their parents and two priests.
A massacre in a church during Mass, accompanied by acts of derision against the holy cross and the crucifixion of Christ, and all on the basis of an erroneous reading of the Koran, which denies that Christ actually was crucified and maintains that God intervened to save the prophet Jesus.
But the Holy Father is also surely thinking of the many acts of violence perpetrated by Muslim terrorists against mosques, against Muslim faithful gathered in prayer or performing pilgrimages to the holy sites of Shia Islam.
Violence is indeed blind, and does not respect any religion. As Benedict XVI stated on 12 September 2006 during his famous address at the University of Regensburg, an address later deformed and politicised by the media and the masses: violence is in itself primarily an act against God and against Reason; in other words, against the specific nature of Man.
2. "When Christians are wounded, we ourselves are wounded"
Alas, this violence has become generalised and widespread throughout the world. Yet the Pope makes it clear that, "in the present situation, Christians are the most oppressed and tormented minority" on the planet. This is not a gratuitous or unfounded claim: it is based in numerous studies of recent years such as those of Antonio Socci, I nuovi perseguitati (2002), and René Guitton, Ces chrétiens qu'on assassine en terre d'islam (2009) [published in Italian as Cristianofobia. La nuova persecuzione, 2010]. Western analysis often identify various reasons for this persecution (political, economic, ethnic, cultural, etc.), yet the fact remain that the people who perpetrate it often do so in the name of religion, and not of politics or anything else!
At this point in his address, the Holy Father referred to the "wise words" pronounced by Dr. Muhammad as-Sammak, "Counsellor of the Mufti of the Republic of Lebanon", whom he quoted as saying: "when Christians are wounded, we ourselves are wounded".
A little later the Pope commented: "The human being is one, and humanity is one. Whatever damage is done to another in any one place, ends up by damaging everyone". This phrase makes us think of the Koran, verse 32 sura 5 (The Table Set): "We decreed for the Children of Israel that whosoever killeth a human being for other than manslaughter or corruption in the earth, it shall be as if he had killed all mankind", which in turn evokes the Jewish saying that "Whosever kills one man, it is as if he killed the whole world".
Al-Sammak - a friend of long standing who also attended the 1995 "Synod for Lebanon" in the Vatican - has always maintained, along with other lay and religious Lebanese Muslims, that the Christian presence in Lebanon (and the Middle East) is a positive, indeed an essential, element for the entire political community of the reigon.
3. This voice of reason is unfortunately too weak!
With great realism, the Pope added: "Unfortunately, though, this and similar voices of reason, for which we are profoundly grateful, are too weak". Once again, it is important to highlight the contrast he draws between reason and violence. This is a fundamental theme in Joseph Ratzinger's philosophy: violence is an unreasonable act and therefrom an act against God! This link between God and Reason is vital if we are to understand his political-religious vision, on condition that we understand the concept of rationality in the full and Hellenistic meaning of the word, which includes spirituality and ethics. We know the importance of this from his Regensburg address, and from all his philosophical-theological thinking.
Such violence is often due to an "alliance between greed for profit and ideological blindness", which are two of the most important causes of violence. In my view, the latter is more evident in violence of Islamic origin, which is precisely an "ideological blindness", a blind interpretation of religion and in particular of the Koran and Islamic tradition. Terrorists give a political reading to the holy text: since Islam is the divine religion par excellence, all means are valid to lead humankind to God through Islam.
In this sense terrorism, being a blind ideology, cannot be tackled using only military means. I feel that Benedict XVI's approach is important in the current situation, as it goes beyond all forms of terrorism.
4. The Synod of Bishops: dialogue, forgiveness and acceptance
How did the bishops attending the Middle East Synod react to this state of affairs? "On the basis of the spirit of faith and its rationality, the Synod developed a grand concept of dialogue, forgiveness and mutual acceptance, a concept that we now want to proclaim to the world", the Pope said.
Indeed, the Synod was very clear on this point: the only possible response is forgiveness. Let us remind everyone of John Paul II's Message for the Celebration of the 2002 World Day Of Peace: "No peace without justice. No justice without forgiveness". This was reiterated on a number of occasions during the Synod, both in the context of violence and in that of peace between Israelis and Palestinians. These are difficult words to accept when one has suffered almost complete destruction and the loss of loved ones, but they remain essential.
Benedict XVI also launched an appeal to political leaders "to put a stop to Christianophobia; to rise up in defence of refugees and all who are suffering, and to revitalise the spirit of reconciliation". I believe that Christianophobia is a new theme as I cannot recall ever having heard the expression, which in any case is rare, used by the Holy Father. Yet it well expresses the gravity of the situation, as outlined earlier in the two abovementioned books by Socci and Guitton.
As always, neither the Pope nor the Synod limited themselves to merely complaining. Theirs was a more farsighted vision. Beyond the persecution of Christians, the Pope and the Synod invited leaders "to rise up in defence of refugees and all who are suffering", and "to revitalise the spirit of reconciliation". This, as Benedict XVI concluded, is also "the Church's principal task at this hour".

“If I Were Pope!”

prominent - prominent

pope-chhotebhai
Does this title shock you?  It is meant to.  Is it audacious?  The word is described as being recklessly daring.  I am being daring; but reckless?  Wait till you finish reading  this.  Our former President APJ Abdul Kalam advised young people to dream with their eyes open, so as to convert their dreams into reality.  That is true daring.  It is a calculated risk.  And nothing risked is nothing gained.
What Kalam said in a national context is exactly what the first Pope, St. Peter, said in his very first public address.  Explaining the Pentecostal experience Peter first dispelled the false notion that they might be drunk, saying it was still the “third hour of the day” (Acts 2:16).  He then went on to quote the Prophet Joel by saying, “I shall pour out my spirit on all humanity. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your young people shall see visions, your old people dream dreams” (Acts 2:17). So it is sagacious, not audacious, to have dreams, even of becoming Pope!
I have a one-in-600-million chance of becoming Pope, because that is the approximate number of male Catholics in the world today.  Since I am married and nearing 60, the odds against my becoming Pope can be multiplied by another million.  So I have a 1-in-600-trillion chance of becoming Pope.  It does not deter me from having my vision of the Papacy.

MY NAME:  If I were to be the Pope I would take the name of Peter the Second, not because I envisage the end of the world, a la Malachy, but because Peter is my favourite biblical persona. I closely identify myself with the fumbling and bumbling fisherman.  At his very first encounter with Jesus, he actually asked him to leave him alone (cf Lk 5:8).  At the Transfiguration when Jesus was giving him the keys and renaming him Peter, he again misunderstood Jesus’ intentions (cf Lk 9:33).  He floundered in faith while walking on the water (cf Mat 14:30).  He couldn’t face a young girl’s questioning, and denied knowledge of Jesus (cf Mat 26:70).  At the Ascension he couldn’t commit himself to unequivocally stating that he loved Jesus (cf Jn 21:15-17).  There was obviously something more than human frailty that Jesus saw in him, to appoint him the first Pope (in today’s parlance.)

THE DREAM: There was a hue and cry when Peter II became the Pope.  The first indication of what was to come is that the stock markets in America, Europe, Japan, Hong Kong and even India, crashed.  It is believed that these shadowy figures, that control   share prices, have a better world view than Heads of State, Finance Ministers or leaders of religion.  As Peter II unfolded his vision for the Catholic Church, the markets crashed further, and OPEC countries faced bankruptcy, because the price of crude oil had crashed to $10 per barrel.

THE ACTS OF PETER II: The first act of the new Pope was to auction all the treasures in the Vatican museum, amounting to several billion dollars.  With such a flood of artwork on the markets auction houses like Sotheby’s and Christies couldn’t handle the rush.  The price of MF Hussain’s paintings also crashed.  A scrap dealer in Bhayandar bought one for Rs. 10,000/-.
Peter II’s second act was to close all the Vatican embassies throughout the world.  He did not believe that the papacy needed to be an earthly power, having diplomatic immunity and status.  However, because of the past history of conflict with Roman emperors, he retained Vatican City as a neutral city state, similar to the UN headquarters in New York.  When a red sashed and red faced Cardinal had the audacity to challenge the Pope’s decisions Peter II told him about one of his predecessors who was escorting an atheist friend around the Vatican museum.  In a lighter vein the then Pope had remarked that like St. Peter he could not say “Silver and gold I have none”.  Smack came the atheist retort, “That is why you cannot also say – In the name of Jesus, get up and walk”.  The Pope was alluding to the incident referred to in the Acts of Apostles, of a lame person seeking alms from Peter at the temple (cf Acts 3: 1-6).  The Cardinal beat a hasty retreat.  After the initial crash, the markets began to pick up gradually.  Peter II strongly felt that power and pelf had clouded the vision of the Church, and made a clarion call for simplicity of life.  He set an example by walking down the streets of Rome, and visiting the poor in the ghettoes.  Rather than going to Castel Gandolfo as a summer resort, he decided to spend 6 months every year in a Benedictine monastery, including working in the fields and with the cattle.  It brought him close to nature and to mother earth.  He asked all his bishops and priests to live simple and prayerful lives, reminding them that “No man can serve two masters” (cf Lk 16:13).  He exhorted the hierarchy to get out of their entrenched and fortified positions to prepare for a new Pentecost, a fresh out pouring of the Spirit, as prayed for by his humble predecessor Pope John XXIII.  He convened the Third Vatican Council (Vat III).  The markets again became volatile.

VAT III:  In a fast changing world, where “Breaking News” was every minute, there was an urgent need for aggiornamento (updating). Vat II had concluded in 1965 (46 years ago), the New Code of Canon Law had been promulgated in 1983, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church in 1992.  It was time to take stock again.  He felt pained that the vision of Vat II had been watered down, especially in terms of the Church’s own self understanding, and its consequent attitudinal change vis-à-vis the world, science and other religions.  He did not believe in a Clash of Civilisations.  He believed that to be civilized one must be conciliatory in nature.  As a prelude to VAT III he directed that every Episcopal Conference organise a national synod to prepare for the third millennium of Christianity.  The exercise would involve all levels of the Church from the parish onwards; and all sections like youth, women, clergy, religious and laity.  He did not prepare a Lineanmenta (guideline) but he did express some of his concerns that needed redress:

PETER II’S CONCERNS:
•    Why the vision of Vat II was not implemented, especially in de-structuring the Church, and making it more participatory; including the collegiality of bishops and the fraternity of the laity?
•    The need for ecumenical unity with other churches, and a bigger interface with leaders of other religions.
•    An open dialogue with science, especially in the areas of genetics, human reproduction and the sanctity of life; as also a more pastoral and understanding approach to those in moral conflict situations.
•    The question of married priests and the ordination of women
•    The first Council of the Church was held in Jerusalem when St Peter had to justify his act of doing away with circumcision as a pre-requisite to being God’s chosen people, saying “God was giving them the identical gift he gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ: and who was I to stand in God’s way?” (Acts 11: 17).  Perhaps the time had come to reconsider whether an external act like Baptism alone was the gateway to the Kingdom?
•    He even touched on seemingly innocuous phrases from the Our Father and Hail Mary, like “forgive us our trespasses” or  “the fruit of your womb”, suggesting that the language of our prayer should be commensurate with modern idiomatic usage.
•    He asked for study circles in all parishes to reflect on three important documents of Vat II: (1) Dogmatic Constitution of the Church (Lumen Gentium) (2) Pastoral Constitution of the Church in the Modern World (Gaudium et Spes) and (3) Declaration of the Relationship of the Church to non-Christian Religions (Nostra Aetate).

POSTSCRIPT:  I know that I will never be the Pope and I have no desire to be so either.  Neither do I wish any disrespect to the Papacy.  Both my parents were papal awardees – my father with the Knighthood of St Gregory, and my mother with the “Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice” medal.  When Pope John Paul II came to New Delhi in 1986, after receiving communion from his hands I knelt down and kissed his feet.  This does not mean that as a loyal member of the Catholic Church I should turn a blind eye to what I see happening, or not happening around me.
I pray for a new Pentecost in the Church.  I pray for the convening of Vat III.  I pray that the Church in India, having the advantage of a pluralistic, ancient, religious and also secular society, takes the lead in building up a groundswell of opinion for VAT III or better still JERUSALEM II.  I dare to dream.

Tribal Christian's - Alcoholism & Infighting

prominent - prominent

barack-obama

In some of the Tribal areas of Rajasthan & Gujarat some Jain Monks are involved in converting the tribals to Jainism. After converting to Jainism the tribals have abandoned alcoholism & infighting becaue the Jain monks teach these tribals the various rules & regulations from the holy book of the Jain’s i.e. the Kalpa Sutra. The Christian (catholic, protestant, baptist, etc) Missionaries are also involved in converting Tribals to Christianity in many parts of India. But the status of Tribals has not changed that’s because the Christian missionaries do not teach the tribals the various rules and regulations of the Bible. The Christian Missionaries are merely trying to convert the tribals by giving free food, medicine, clothes, etc and the Tribals are merely converting to escape the clutches of local Hindu Zamindars and to get allurements from the Christian Missionaries.

In the 1970s & 80s the Christian Missionaries aggressively focused on converting the Dalit Hindus to Christianity. Some of the Dalit Hindus converted to Christianity merely to escape the caste system of Hinduism. After converting to Christianity the Dalits found out that the caste system also exist in Christianity due to which it became difficult for the Christian Missionaries to convert other dalit hindus. Hence from the 1990’s the Christian Missionaries shifted their focus to converting the Tribals.

In 2008 in Kandhmal most of the clergy and missionaries fled to the safety of Kerala, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mangalore leaving the Tribal Christians at the mercy of the facist Hindutva Organizations (rss-vhp-bajrangdal).

The Protestant Britishers did not come to India to prosetylize but to take over the trade routes from the Portuguese and sabotage the catholic mission of the Portuguese. The Britishers gave tremendous business opportunities to the Marwaris, Gujratis, Sindhis, Jains & Parsis this explains why this five communities are the most prosperous communities ofcourse the Marwaris, Gujratis, Sindhis, Jains & Parsis also have excellent entrepreneurial skills.

All Jains have Hindu names. All Jains apart from worshipping Mahavira also worship Hindu gods especially Ganpati, Laxmi, Durga, Krishna. Many Jain industrialists, businessmen, traders, diamond merchants are providing tons of donations to the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (World Hindu Council). Some leaders and office bearers of the VHP are from the Jain community. The Jains are promoting the cause of right wing Hindutva organizations.

Jain religion is fundamentally opposed to the seven vices like polygamy, adultery, addiction to alcholic drinks, harlotry and gambling. Women from this religion are saved from the torture that results from these evils.

Three major problems which most Christians in India face are – One inability to get Government jobs / facilities / housing; Two inability to get admission in Christian Schools, colleges, institutions; Three continuous threat from facist hitlerite hindutva organizations i.e. Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh – Vishwa Hindu Parishad – paramilitary Bajrang Dal – shiv sena.

The rss-vhp-bajrangdal-shivsena follow the strategy of Adolf Hitler and his propaganda minister Josef Goebel. Ofcourse without the support of the ias/ips officers the rss-vhp-bajrangdal-shivsena will not be able to function even for a day. More than 90% of ias/ips officers in India are from the Hindu community. There are a few Christian ias/ips officers whom the Vishwa Hindu Parishad accuses of helping Christian missionaries. The VHP wants the dismissal of all Christian ias/ips officers.

Through the Ayodhya verdict the Hindutvawadis want to set right all historical wrongs. Todays Muslims must make amends for what the Muslim princess did centuries ago. All ancient Hindu temple sites must be restored. They forget that even Hindu princess looted their own temples, Buddhist viharas were converted into Hindu temples, Jains were harassed, Shaivite temples were turned into Vaishnavite temples and vice versa.

The activities of Hindutvawadis, Maoists, Islamic Terrorists, Christian Missionaries, Corrupt Politicians / bureaucrats/ govt.servants are the major dangers facing the Indian nation. There is also another danger. The Hindus & Muslims are in competition with each other in the numbers game this explains why the population of the Hindus & Muslims keeps on rising and a day will come when the water will reach till the neck and there will be a great battle for survival.

US President Barack Obama will visit Bombay in November 2010 to pay homage to the victims of 26/11 Bombay terror attacks. Very nice. When his Air Force One is about to land in Bombay the first things which Obama will see from his Boeing 747 is the thousands of slums around the sahar/santacruz airport and if at all Obama decides to visit any of the slums in Bombay he will encounter a lot of excreta, gutter water and garbage. By paying bribes to the BMC, police, corporators, rationoffice & slumlords the migrants from other parts of India got an excellent opportunity to encroach land all over bombay in broad daylight. And since the slumdwellers are the vote banks so now they are being rewarded with free apartments under the SRA scheme. The SRA scheme was the brainchild of the Shiv Sena to get votes of slumdwellers who were traditionally Congress voters. Those slumdwellers who get the free apartments sell it off for 10 to 15 Lakhs and again bribe local officials, slumlords and encroach new territory and this cycle keeps on repeating. Like Bombay (you can call it Slumbai or Mumbai), Goa is also going in the same direction. Migrants are encroaching land in Goa by bribing local officials & politicians and once these migrants become vote banks they will get free housing.

Alongwith the Hindutva agenda the Shiv Sena also has other agendas. Some of which are. One to prevent Bombay from becoming a Union territory. Two to prevent Konkan from becoming a State, Three to prevent non-maharashtrians from getting jobs in Bombay. Four to wipe out the British history from Bombay. Five to merge Goa with Maharashtra. Six to change the name of Goa to Govapuri. Seven to force non-maharashtrians to learn the marathi language….what is the point in the non-maharashtrians in Bombay learning the marathi language when it is only the maharashtrians who are going to get jobs in bmc, police, state undertakings, etc.

The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) during the last two years has written innumerable letters to Obama to speak up against the atrocities against minorities in India. But so far Obama has remained silent. Prior to Obama’s Visit to India the USCIRF has again written a letter to Obama to speak with the Indian prime minister about the atrocities against minorities in India. Whether Obama speaks or not speaks is irrelevant that’s because the communal poison which the Hindutvawadis ( rss-vhp-bajrangdal-shivsena-etc) have spread has gone far and wide in India. Behind the present day tribulations of India’s minorities ( Muslims, Christians, etc ) lies an insecurity pumped into the Hindu majority by a pre-meditated five-decade campaign that portrayed Muslims and Christians as disloyal, anti-national or criminal. Militant nationalists always need an enemy in order to grow. Hitler had the Jews. In India there are the minorities within and Pakistan, China and the West outside.

The Catholic Clergy (Bishops, Priests) want the lay catholics to have more children but the catholic clergy don’t want to utilize church assets – resources – vacant properties for the benefit of lay catholics and don’t want to reserve 25% seats in catholic schools for children of lay catholics majority of whom are poor. Most lay catholics are aware that the clergy will not bother about the economic upliftment of lay catholics but cannot do anything due to fear of being excommunicated from the church. The only option left with the lay catholics is to setup their local village level associations, trusts, panchayats and help each other. The lay catholics associations should also train lay catholics in Combat so that the lay catholics are prepared for self-defence as and when the enemy decides to replicate the anti-christian kandhmal experiment in other parts of India. The lay catholics will also have to ensure that as many catholics become ias/ips officers as possible and as many catholics apply for jobs in government departments, municipalities, defence forces, etc.

Jesus Christ’s life was not of Secularism. Jesus Christ life was a struggle against the corrupt political & religious leaders of his time. But what we see today is the bishops, cardinals, priests, pastors are living a secular life and not doing anything to fight corruption because these religious leaders are themselves involved in many corrupt activities especially in selling away vacant church properties and misusing church funds.

Openspaces, gardens, playgrounds, mangroves, saltpanlands, farmer/tribal lands, etc everything is being encroached by the state, builders lobby, sez lobby, mining lobby, slumlord & slumdwellers (votebank) lobby. Development is good only if the locals benefit but what is happening in India is the locals are being displaced and their lands & job opportunities are being eaten up by outsiders.

If Politicians wanted to serve people they would have been social workers and not politicians. From top to bottom everybody is into Politics to make easy money. And if Politicians are corrupt and greedy obviously the government servants, bureaucrats, etc will also be corrupt and greedy.

Why Christians are always Targeted?

prominent - prominent

church-attack-2

Why the Christians? Have the Hindus run out of Muslims and Sikhs, that a small and insignificant minority should be threatened, attacked, burned at will by right wing Hindutva forces? This may sound strange, but in a real sense that the saffron mob has in deed - if not in words - run out of options. This is why they have now turned against Christians. They are the last soft target.

The Sikhs set the retaliation game in motion. They hit out, often randomly, at designated targets making it known to Hindu sectarians that taking on a Sikh will not be a picnic any longer. This stopped further attacks against the sikhs. The Muslims picked up this lead and set their own pace by orchestrating the Mumbai blasts of 1993, and several after that in quick
succession. So the Muslims can no longer be hunted down either for casual Hindu amusement.

This only leaves the Christians. It must be borne in mind that Hindutva activists are at their predacious best when the kill is easy and their own safety assured in advance. This is why where Christians are in sizable numbers, such as in Nagaland, Kerala or even Goa, Hindutva sectarians dare not touch them. Instead they turn to areas like the Dangs in Gujarat or Kandmahal in Orissa where Christians are scattered and isolated. In these places it is easy to kill without the fear of being killed.

Hindu extremist parties and organizations, all the way to the BJP, can encourage, condone and organize mobs to kill for Hindutva, but none of them is willing to die for it.

Muslim terrorism in India has nothing to do with Al Qaeda, Taliban, Palestine, or even Iraq. These terrorists are home bred and are direct outcomes of Babri Masjid and Godhra.

Why don't the Hindutva activists go to Nagaland or somewhere else where Christians are in a majority ? Why is it that the Hindutva activists are active only where their safety is guaranteed like BJP ruled states ? In places where there is no administrative encouragement, sanction or connivance, Hindutva activists, of whatever description, dare not strike
any minority community. Wherever Hindutva presence is built into the state administrative system, saffron forces are assured that every ethnic attack will be like a picnic.

When it comes to linguistic and caste wars there is social science involved as jobs are to be won or lost on these grounds. But when Muslims or Christians are killed, nobody wants their income or livelihood. They are attacked only to make Hindutva organizations look good, and nothing else.   This is why, in such contexts, social science of any kind is irrelevant.

The Butts deserve the Kicks

cricket-bat-and-ball

The Pak  Cricket Trinity [the trio  in a 'spot' of bother] has enriched the English language with a new term which can be appropriately called "Spotgate" with their highly indiscreet behaviour off the field creating a furor in   the cricketing game . In fact indiscreet is too mild a term for the treason [as the incensed  Pak fans would like to call it]  just before the start of what was a 'do-or-die' encounter at the game's most  hallowed grounds.

The Scotland Yard, known for its competence, is investigating the issue so the case is in safe hands.  The other body involved is the ICC which  initially preferred to sit on the fence, became aggressive in the face of world wide uproar at the goings-on in the name of cricket. After a preliminary report the world cricket body is satisfied that there is prima facie case against the three and promptly barred them [something unknown in the annals of the game] in the face of stiff Pakistani Government's resistance. Surprisingly, the Pak Cricket Board is nowhere in the frame.

Going by the media reports, it appears that the Pak Cricket Board has been completely ignored which  shows how much the Pak Government gives it importance.  The Pak Government is  handling the issue. Ejaj who headed the Board got a kick on the Butt from his own Government. Their High Commissioner is a confused man with the googly bowled by his own countrymen. He wants to sue the ICC  but then came the story of 'marked currency notes' being found in  the Captain's room -  now it was the turn of Salman to get another kick on the Butt from the ICC. To keep his home constituency calm, as usual, the Pak envoy played  the familiar Indian card - ICC Chief Sharad Pawar and the Indian bookies being responsible for the mess. This only showed how fickle their players are.  Pak's UN envoy, on the contrary, is not on the same page.

It is now reported that the accused have confessed that they  received money from the fixer  for endorsements.  Why did they not admit it first and who pays signing money in cash anyway. From trousseau money now it has become endorsement money. But how come the endorsement money came with 'marked currency'.  The contracts, now produced, must be an after thought and that angle also needs to be probed. The Pak envoy should not have opted to defend the boys. He is making a fool of himself.

For the first time the ICC has realized, rather belatedly, that it has actually got some genuine  teeth [ and not dentures as feared] and if the same alacrity  is maintained it will not be that difficult to cleanse the gentleman's game. It's now or never. The ICC must admit that it was more concerned with the money than the game itself. It is the controlling authority of the game and it must assert itself when it matters most - something is has failed to do. Just by appointing an anti-corruption unit [ACU] it cannot sit back and relax.  What has this unit achieved anyway. It goes to every cricketing venue to ensure that everything is fine. Now that the past 82 games are to go under the scanner, what did the unit do all along.  It looks like the guys were having holidays at the expense of the ICC. If a journalist could lay a trap and expose the nexus, how competent are  the so called elite members of the ACU. Sack them !

The  Tabloid which carried out a sting operation to expose the fixer  did it with immense ease but with a professional touch - taking every care to gather proof that  will stand the test of scrutiny. They knew what the fall-out of the mission would be - literally shake the cricketing world and indeed it did. It's a challenge which the ICC must accept.

Pakistan's  peculiar ways of handling indiscipline in the ranks has baffled many.  Their team [if you can call it one ] suffers from 'trust deficit'  - may be one simply  does not trust the other. In such an atmosphere,  personal interests  overtake the national pride and with their board not being able to clean the stable, it raises doubts about its integrity as well as well as competence and even complexity.

A lot of Pak ex-cricketers, including Asif Iqbal of Sharjah fame, have suddenly woken up to berate their errant players which sounds good.  However, each and every one of them has been accused [may be guilty too] of indiscretion during their playing days. It's like the devil quoting the scriptures. Who knows it may help.

Bombay's Catholics v/s Maharashtra State & Bombay Muncipal Corporation.

prominent - prominent

gateway_of_india

The fact that so many Catholics prefer laziness, inactivity and mediocrity to excellence, success, and reaching their full potentials should be more alarming. You want results Catholics? Then get off your lazy butts. Cast off your laziness and mediocrity and exchange it for diligence and excellence and awaken your Church from its spiritual slumber. Awake, sleeper, and arise from the dead [lifeless faith], and Christ will shine on you.

The Maharashtra state not satisfied with acquiring the agricultural lands of the catholic natives in Bombay is now in the process of converting records in collectors office to prove that the catholic villages in Bombay are slums and catholics living there are land encroachers. An example is Sahar where catholic villages have been declared slums making it easier for the airport authorities to bulldoze these catholic villages.

Due to the stiff opposition to the Special Economic/Entertainment Zone from the catholics living in Gorai-Manori-Uttan region the Maharashtra state is now in the process of intimidating the catholics living there by allowing pagodas, garbage dumping grounds, etc to be set up in the gorai-manori-uttan region. The Maharashtra state is also not interested in protecting the lungs ( openspaces, mangroves, saltpanlands ) of Bombay.

The Bombay Muncipal Corporation has invented a system wherein catholics living in villages are prevented from demolishing their old dilapidated houses to construct a new structure. This has resulted in an acute housing problem in catholic villages. The BMC is also supplying less water to catholic villages in Bombay compared to the slums and housing societies that surround these villages. All this proves the anti-catholic agenda of BMC.

150 years back 80% of Bombay's population was catholic and the rest 20% were Kolis. Today only 5% of Bombay's population is catholic and most of these catholics live in penury because of the anti-catholic policies of the Maharashtra state and the Bombay Muncipal Corporation.

The Roman Catholic Church did nothing to help the catholic natives of Bombay. The Roman Catholic Church in Bombay has no political will, it only believes in numbers and head counts at the Sunday Mass.

Marriage certificates, baptism certificates, caste certificates issued by the roman catholic church in Bombay has no validity in Bombay municipal corporation, Courts or any government department in Bombay this proves the roman catholic church in Bombay does not have any political clout in Bombay. The Roman Catholic Church is also scarred to demand a quota in government jobs for bombay's catholic youth.

So this is it, the Catholic community, is a peaceful quiet community, controlled under duress, a few leaders but all rubber stamp type. The only fire and brimstone is during the sermons in the Church. Peace Marches happen, Candle light marches happen but majority of the catholics in Bombay live in penury.

After 1970 :-
1. The catholic clergy stopped utilizing vacant church properties for the housing needs of poor catholics and instead started selling away the vacant church properties to non-catholics. The parishioners are not informed of what the clergy do with the money received from sale of church properties. The vacant properties in possession of the catholic church in Bombay were donated in the past by poor old childless catholic couples.
2. The catholic missionaries stopped serving poor catholics and went to serve poor non-catholics living in slums.
3. Catholic hospitals stopped giving concessions to poor catholics and started giving concessions to poor non-catholics.
4. Catholic schools/colleges/institutions ignored poor catholics.

Inspite of all the Harassment, intimidations and strong arm tactics by the Maharashtra state, Bombay municipal corp, collectors office, politicians, mafia, builders & slumlords the Catholic Natives of Bombay have carried on with life because of their deep faith in Blessed Mother Mary and Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
